This candle is a celebration of Pittsburgh’s own August Wilson!
August’s candle of the month is inspired by Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The play is set in a 1920’s Chicago recording studio and grapples with issues of race, art, religion, and the historic exploitation of Black recording artists by white producers.
While not a strictly true story, Wilson’s play celebrates the real Ma Rainey.
Ma Rainey - “The Mother of the Blues” - was a fiery performer and trailblazer.
Like so many other Black performers of the time under white management, she was often silenced, capitalized, exploited.
They play discusses Ma’s ability to reclaim power. Starting with her Cola-Cola. Ma can not start singing until she gets a cold Cola-Cola. A simple, inexpensive, reasonable request that resulted in her being labeled “difficult” or “a diva”.
This sultry fragrance blend is an ode to Ma.
The scent of cola is the star of this fragrance blend - bold, effervescent, spicy-sweet
The cola fragrance is backed up by a harmony of bandroom-inspired scents - warm, woodsy notes of the cedar dance floor, hints of gin and champagne, and a slight whiff of smoky pipe tobacco.
